Now, it's time for our first doubles drill. This doubles drill is going to help you really identify when the ball's low and you need to reset the point by sending it back to the base liner versus when the ball's high. The reason why this is so important is because if you make the wrong selection, you're going to put yourself in trouble. Remember, one of the big principles for doubles doubles is about making your opponent hit up so you can hit down.
So if you're the person having to hit up, make sure there's no one there in front of you when you're doing it. That's why I want to go back to the baseline. I don't want to go to the net player now in reverse. If the ball is high, then I want to attack the net and keep following that up. So this is the first drill that you're going to do to really cement this idea of taking the low ball back to the base liner and then attacking the high ball to the net player.
So notice how I'm waiting to, notice how all the low balls and even balls that are kind of net level. I'm taking it back to the baseline. Unless I'm really, really close, I don't have access to the court what one of my access is. I want you to understand that the cameras probably two feet inside the service line. And so if you look over the net, you can't see that much.
I'm probably five feet away from the net. Even from this position, I can see a lot more court. So this is why you see so many coaches. And here's so many coaches saying move forward because with every step forward, you have more access to the court. And so I would not attack the ball unless I have access to the court and the ball is high. And so this is really important to distinguish this when the ball is low I don't have access to the court, send the ball back to the base liner when the ball is high. I have access to the court if I'm close enough.
So this is another kind of distinguishing moment that you have to understand if I was hitting a high ball from behind the service line. I probably don't have that much access to the court, so I still need to take the ball back to the person whose deepest. Ok, well. And it's not an easy drill, as you can see, you're going to make a couple of mistakes, but the key is recognizing what ball you should and when you should hit it.
And so you can see how you could get really good at even the setting up cones and having a ball machine or having a partner doing this drill. It's a great drill to focus on keeping the ball deep when it's low and waiting for the right opportunity.
