If you're looking for a great drill to really help you succeed on the singles court, this is a drill you're going to want to do because it's going to work on your recovery position, which is one of the biggest elements of being successful at singles, making sure you're in the right spot at the right time.
So the way this drill is going to work is making sure that when you're rallying cross-court or down the line that you move back to the right position based on the shot you hit. So we're going to start with this. It's just simply going cross-court. You can use a ball machine or partner, and I recommend just trying to hit 10 balls, cross court with your forehand and then move back to the correct recovery position.
Meaning if I hit it cross court or should you be, you already know, because you've watched the technical video that you're not supposed to move all the way back to the middle. And so just practice this until it feels very natural spin up by about 10 to 12 minutes, just hitting cross court, moving back to the position until it feels very natural.
Do the exact same thing on the backhand side too, because we want to make sure that we're getting back to the right recovery position. Now, the next level of this drill is also working on the down the line, meaning that a great thing to do is have a ball machine or a partner feed you both down the line and then you move where you're supposed to be. Now you also know by watching the technical video that you don't want to just hit this ball really hard down the line.
You want to gain some time and buy yourself time to get across to the new recovery position. Now, once you do these two things, this really covers most of the shots. Obviously, if you hit the ball in the middle, you want to stay in the middle, but now you also have the cross score and down the line.
The final drill you want to do is simply rally with your opponent where they can hit anywhere and you respond by wherever you hit the shot, you move to the correct position. Now this is so important that you get really good at moving to the correct position regardless of what shot you hit if you hit a down the line shot, making sure that if you go down the line, you're going to give yourself plenty of time to move across the court.
If you go across court means you don't have to have a lot of time because you're hitting yourself into position and recognizing that feeling of hitting yourself in and out of position. When you do these drills, you're going to really see the difference of Wow, if I don't get back to the correct recovery position, how it´s going to really hurt me when I'm playing my singles scan.
So make sure you go out, take it step by step again, practice just a forehand, moving back to the forehand crosscourt position. Then practice the backhand and then practice to down the line. Then put it all together by just rolling with your partner and say, Hey, we're just going to hit around and let's just keep it going and then move to the correct position that you should be moving to based on the shot you're hitting.
